About 80% of early learning activities rely on sight, with less emphasis on touch and sound. For children with vision impairments, learning through touch, hearing, and any remaining vision is crucial. Early identification of vision problems and proper support can greatly improve their development. The Blind Low Vision Early Intervention Program offers services to families with children who have been diagnosed or are being diagnosed with a visual impairment. These services are available from birth to school entry.
The program includes the following components:
Specially trained Early Childhood Vision Consultants work with caregivers to create learning opportunities that support a child’s overall development. These services are offered at home, in childcare, and in community settings.
Referrals to the Blind-Low Vision program can be made by completing and submitting the NWHU’s online referral form or by calling the North Words central intake line at 1-877-553-7122.
