Seating and Mobility Clinic

Attending the Seating and Mobility Clinic can offer children and youth unique ways to participate in daily life at home, school or in the community. The clinic will provide assessment and prescription of custom and off-the-shelf equipment, including:

  • Supportive seating systems.
  • Specialized stroller systems.
  • Manual wheelchairs.
  • Power wheelchairs and scooters.

Resources

The clinic offers the following services:

  • Assessment of client’s needs and appropriate equipment recommendations to meet those needs.
  • Adjustment of current equipment related to functional status or growth changes.
  • Secure funding before equipment is ordered.
  • Dispense and set up of equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is providing proper support after it has been dispensed.

The First Visit

During the first visit, a Seating and Mobility Occupational Therapist will assess your child’s physical abilities and needs, determine caregiver goals and put a plan into place.

This may include:

  • A follow-up appointment to explore new equipment.
  • A referral for an orthopaedic consultation.
  • Modification to your child’s current seating and mobility system.
  • Recommendations for such modifications to occur in the future.
What is a Seating & Mobility Occupational Therapist?

They are an Assistive Devices Programs (ADP) authorizer with specialized skills to work with children and youth who require seating and mobility equipment.

ADP is a program which offers funding for both seating and wheeled mobility bases through the Ministry of Health.

  • ADP will pay up to 75% of the cost of prescribed seating.
  • Families receiving benefits from Community and Social Services are eligible for 100% funding for seating equipment.
  • Only one seating system can be funded at a time per person.

The Seating and Mobility Clinic may include:

  • You and your child (birth to school exit) with:
    • A developmental or physical disability;
    • Who has a seating and/or mobility need;
    • And resides in the FIREFLY catchment area.
  • A Seating and Mobility Occupational Therapist.
  • Any Occupational Therapist currently working with your child.
  • A Rehabilitation Assistant.
  • An Equipment Technician.
